Owner & President of Virginia Lake Management Company
Kevin Tucker started Virginia Lake Management in 1998 to focus on the growing need for adequate management of lakes and storm water retention ponds and the preservation of our natural resources. He is an active member of many leading trade and professional organizations and remains on the cutting edge of technology, product, and service improvements in the aquatics industry. Kevin and the Virginia Lake Management staff work with many leading aquatic product manufacturers to perform case studies and field research for many of the new products being introduced to the market. Kevin has been a speaker at many trade and professional shows and conferences, and sits on the Board of multiple trade and professional associations. He is a regularly published author for many industry related publications, and has been featured in various articles written and published by newspapers, businesses, and other traded related publications.
Kevin Tucker is a graduate of James Madison University and holds a degree in Business Management & Finance. He is a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Leadership Training Course, as well as many industry and technical course curriculums for aquatics, lake management, limnology, environmental science, fisheries management, and GPS mapping and bathymetry. Kevin is widely recognized as an expert in the management of lakes, ponds, and other freshwater systems, as well as the management of invasive aquatic plants.
Kevin Tucker maintains many licensing and industry accreditations to include, Certified Aquatics Pesticide Applicator for Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia, SePRO Certified Preferred Applicator, AquaMaster Certified Sales, Service, & Repair, Vertex Certified Sales, Service, & Repair, Otterbine Factory Service Certification, Aqua Control certified distributor, and is a Cabela’s Lake Mapping Partner.
Kevin Tucker and his firm are members of many associations dedicated to the improvement of our industry, our customer’s needs, and our professional growth to include Community Associations Institute (CAI)– SEVA, Central VA, Washington Metro, North Carolina, Chesapeake, and Pennsylvania – Delaware Valley chapters, NALMS (North American Lake Management Society, APMS (The Aquatic Plant Management Society), Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation (AERF), RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment), WSSA (Weed Science Society of America), VLWA (Virginia Lakes & Watersheds Association), Virginia Turfgrass Council, Turfgrass Council of North Carolina, Hampton Roads Nursery & Landscape Association, and EO (Entrepreneurs Organization).
Kevin is a father, husband, and avid outdoorsman. He is a native of southeastern Virginia, and has spent much of his life on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he nurtured his passion for the ocean and all that it offers. His love of water and the natural environment is what has fueled his passion for his work and his play. If not in the ocean, you will find Kevin in the mountains, on a river, by a waterfall, or on a trail. He enjoys surfing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, hiking, camping, skiing, snow boarding, and most every sport.
David Ellison
Aquatic Biologist
David Ellison is an Aquatic Biologist with the Virginia Lake Management team. Prior to joining the Virginia Lake Management, Dave was employed as the Assistant Superintendant for an area golf course. During his years there, he was a licensed pesticide applicator for turfgrass. This experience, coupled with his education made him an instant asset to Virginia Lake Management. Today, Dave is a certified pesticide applicator for both turf and aquatics in Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. He is also a certified AquaMaster Technician and a SePRO preferred applicator and keeps his industry knowledge current by participating regularly in continuing education programs.
Dave obtained a BS in Biology from Old Dominion University in 2004, graduating Cum Laude. He concentrated in marine sciences with a minor in chemistry.
Like most of the Virginia Lake Management team, Dave enjoys being outside and particularly enjoys the ocean. During his off time, you will often find Dave on the beach. He is an avid surfer and enjoys spending time with his family.
Dustin Kennedy
Aquatic Biologist
Dustin Kennedy, Aquatic Biologist, joined the Virginia Lake Management team having just graduated from Old Dominion University. Quickly, Dustin became a valuable part of the Virginia Lake Management team. As Operations Manager, Dustin is responsible for the daily scheduling, and overall management of the field staff. During his tenure, he has taken advantage of many training opportunities resulting in his being both an AquaMaster factory certified technician and an Otterbine factory certified technician. Additionally, Dustin is a licensed Aquatic Pesticide Applicator in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina and Pennsylvania as well as a SePRO Preferred Applicator.
Before joining Virginia Lake Management, Dustin worked in the landscape, electrical and construction industries. All of these past experiences, his education, and his years of training have contributed to his success with Virginia Lake Management.
Dustin has a passion for aquatic environments and you will rarely find him far from the water. If he is not working on a pond or lake, you will find him in any number of favorite fishing spots or wherever there are good waves.
Greg Blackham
Aquatic Specialist
Greg Blackham is an Aquatic Specialist with the Virginia Lake Management Team. Prior to his employment, Greg worked in residential and light commercial construction, as well as landscaping and horticulture. It is this landscaping and horticulture experience which has proven to be a very valuable part of his work with Virginia Lake Management. Greg is a licensed Aquatic Pesticide Applicator in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Greg regularly attends educational opportunities provided by industry professionals. He is an AquaMaster Certified Technician and is a SePRO Preferred Applicator.
Greg grew up in California and moved to Virginia after his active duty service in the Army. When not on the water, you can find Greg spending time with his wife and two beautiful daughters.
Ellen Stace
Office Manager
Ellen Stace, Office Manager, makes sure that everything in the office operates smoothly each day. As part of her daily duties, Ellen acts as a liaison between the office and field staff to coordinate communications. Ellen is usually described as the “voice” of Virginia Lake Management because of the cheerful voice she has when answering our many incoming calls. She handles most of our supply orders and shipments and is an integral part of customer communications everyday. Ellen’s knowledge of Lake Management has developed over the years through formal and on-the-job training. This, coupled with her extensive set of administrative skills, make her a valued employee of Virginia Lake Management and an asset to the industry.
Ellen retired from the U.S. Air Force where she served in Command and Control. She holds an Associates Degree in Science from Thomas Nelson Community College and was previously employed by Auto Haus in Yorktown, Virginia. Ellen is a wife and mom and enjoys hiking, camping, roller bladeing and trying to stay fit.
Kyle Finerfrock
Environmental Scientist
Kyle Finerfrock is an Environmental Scientist with Virginia Lake Management. During his time on staff, Kyle has worked to receive many qualifications and certifications. In 2005, he passed the Virginia Department of Agriculture general pesticide applicator and aquatic pesticide applicator exams which led him to be licensed to apply aquatic herbicides in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. In 2006, Kyle completed the AquaMaster Sales and Product Training Course held at the factory in Kiel, Wisconsin and the SePRO’s preferred applicator program. In 2007, Kyle went to the Cabela’s corporate headquarters in Sidney, Nebraska to become a Trophy Properties Lake Mapping Partner where he learned the skills to map lakes with integrated GPS and depth sounding equipment. The training and education Kyle has received has made him a well rounded lake manager and ecologist.
Growing up in Warsaw, Virginia, Kyle Finerfrock was always interested in nature and the science of life. After graduating with honors in 2001 from Rappahannock High School, Kyle enrolled in Christopher Newport University (CNU) to study Biology. He graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science concentrating in Marine Biology. While attending CNU, Kyle participated in many extracurricular activities including the Rugby Club and the Biology Club.
Kyle has always enjoyed the outdoors whether he is participating in sports or socializing with friends. This passion for the great outdoors is what originally fueled his interest in ecology and is a constant in his daily life. When Kyle is not working on one of our many lakes, you will find him hiking, fishing or playing rugby.
Lee Abernathy
Environmental Scientist
Lee Abernathy began working for Virginia Lake Management in June of 2008. He joined the Virginia Lake Management Staff after graduating from the University of Virginia where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in ecology. During his years at UVA, Lee began to show a true passion for the environment. He interned with the Virginia Tech Agricultural and Research Extension Center. This experience gave him extensive insight into habitat management with an emphasis on ecosystem harming vegetation. Lee also took an interest in other subjects such as Urban and Environmental Planning. His increased studies and workload led to his obtaining a minor in this area of study.
Lee is licensed in Aquatic Pest Control in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and North Carolina. Each year Lee is part of the Company’s Sepro training, making him a preferred applicator of their specialty products. Lee is also a qualified AquaMaster® technician and is experienced with all types of fountain and aerator motors.
Lee is an avid fisherman, enjoying both saltwater and freshwater fishing. He is an environmentally conscious person and brings these ideals to Virginia Lake Management.
Randy Bolin
Sales Manager
Randy Bolin is the Sales Manager for the Virginia Lake Management staff. He is an integral part of the Virginia Lake Management team in that he is often the first contact many have with our company. Randy has an enthusiastic attitude with his customers and always provides service with a personal touch making certain that each project is handled in a professional and timely manner.
Randy has a strong sales background. Before his years at Virginia Lake Management, Randy worked in Real Estate Sales, Insurance Investments and Retail Sales. Originally a native of North Carolina, Randy has called Virginia Beach home for twenty years. He enjoys spending time with friends and loves golf and travel. While at home, Randy enjoys visits from his three wonderful grandchildren. He feels privileged to pick them up from school, attend their t-ball and soccer games, or just enjoy a weekend with the family.
Shannon Junior
Aquatic Ecologist
Shannon Junior is an Aquatic Ecologist with the Virginia Lake Management team and is using her regional experience to help further expand our geographic range throughout Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and beyond.
Shannon has worked in the pond and lake management industry in Northern Virginia for eight years. She has been a Virginia Certified Pesticide applicator since 2001 and is currently certified in West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware having extensive experience with integrated pest management strategies for nuisance vegetation control. Shannon has managed projects involving all facets of lake management, including ecological assessment, fisheries enhancement, aeration, aquatic landscaping, structural inspection/repairs, and dredging. She has passed the Virginia Class A Contractor exam, and is experienced with feasibility studies, design, regulatory permitting, and construction of new ponds. In addition to her extensive qualifications, Shannon also maintains her AquaMaster mechanic certification and attends SePRO training as part of being a Preferred Applicator.
Shannon received a B.S. in Biology from George Mason University in 1995. She returned to GMU in 1998 for graduate studies in Environmental Science and Public Policy, and performed her thesis research on the ecological effects of an open water dredge material deposition site in the Potomac River under a grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She also participated as a research assistant in projects involving pyrite mine reclamation, nutrient enrichment of the Potomac River and its tributaries, coral reef diseases, and wood turtle ecology.
Shannon has a deep appreciation for aquatic habitats and has spent much of her life in and around the water. She has spent several summers on a live-aboard sailboat in the Bahamas, SCUBA diving on a different reef every day. She has lived out West, and enjoyed extended rafting and kayaking trips on dozens of whitewater and desert rivers. Shannon is a wildlife enthusiast, and loves that her job provides frequent opportunities to view many species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other animals. She lives in a log cabin with her husband and four dogs, and spends her spare time hiking, gardening, cooking, and touring wineries.
David Beasley
Fisheries Biologist
David Beasley, Fisheries Biologist, joined the Virginia Lake Management team as part of the Fisheries Division. In 2004, David graduated from the State University of New York in Cobleskill with a BS in Fisheries and Aquaculture. For nearly five years following graduation, David worked as a fisheries manager at the private fish and game preserve “Savannah Dhu” in upstate New York. The property consists of 450 acres of water, broken down into 4 lakes, 60 ponds and an indoor culturing facility. From the start, David worked very closely with Bob Lusk “The Pond Boss” learning to manage ponds, culture fish and make good decisions. David has first hand experience raising and managing 24 species of fish including warm, cool and cold water species. David’s work experience includes growing, transporting and stocking forage and predator fish, water quality monitoring, fertilizing ponds, use of automated feeders, electro-shocking and surveying, and managing an indoor culturing facility. Through these experiences David has learned how to create and maintain balanced fisheries, trophy fisheries and how to manage both ponds and indoor facilities for aquaculture purposes. He has also guided hundreds of fishing outings on these bodies of water, seeing first hand the results of good fisheries management, aiding in his overall understanding of fish behavior and fisheries management.
In his spare time David enjoys taking part in many outdoor activities, including his two favorite: whitetail archery and ice fishing. He enjoys all types of hunting, fishing, camping, water sports and just relaxing in the outdoors.
Kimberly Niesel, CMCA
Director of Marketing
Kimberly Niesel joined the Virginia Lake Management staff as the Director of Marketing. She is responsible for helping to introduce the Company’s many products and services to new clients as well as working with existing clients. Kim genuinely enjoys being around people which makes her well-suited for her work.
Kim has extensive marketing and sales experience as well as a strong background in property management. The early part of Kim’s career was spent in property management working first with a property developer and then transitioning to the management team of a large scale community. Eventually she found her way back to her field of study, marketing, when she began working for a company with a national sales platform. This afforded her many opportunities and eventually led her to Virginia Lake Management.
The combination of marketing and property management experience has allowed Kim to become well-known in the industry. She holds her CMCA (Certified Manager of Community Associations) designation, as administered by the National Board of Certification for Community Associations Institute (CAI), and is involved in several industry-related organizations including the Southeastern Virginia, Central Virginia, Chesapeake, Washington Metro, Pennsylvania/Delaware Valley and the North Carolina Chapters of CAI. Kim has been recognized many times for her volunteer involvement and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Virginia and the Central Virginia Chapters of CAI as well as serving on Committees in the North Carolina, Southeastern Virginia, Central Virginia and Washington Metro Chapters.
Kim is a native of Southeastern Virginia and could never think of living anywhere but the coast. The U.S. Navy has been a big part of her family for quite a few years as her husband has been serving his country on active duty. Kim even “joined in” for over two years serving as Command Ombudsman for the USS Cole during her husband’s service on that ship. When taking a moment to pause, Kim enjoys traveling, baseball, socializing with friends and is her daughter’s #1 fan on the soccer field.
Cyd Kroskey
Office Assistant
Cyd Kroskey joined Virginia Lake Management to help the company manage its growing client base. She manages the company’s service order system which has been automated to real time job reporting from the field staff. Cyd is also responsible for managing the customer accounts and works closely with the rest of the office staff to ensure the company’s administrative responsibilities are met. She was previously employed by ARINC in Hampton, VA and served our country for much of her life in the US Air Force. Cyd is a wife, mom and Grandmother and enjoys being with the kids, boating, fishing, and staying young.
Trina Duncan
Controller
Trina Duncan joined the Virginia Lake Management team as the Company’s Controller working in the overall administration of the business and overseeing the firm’s day to day financial transactions, accounting, and other important internal business projects. Trina brings more than twenty years of high level experience in bookkeeping and office management to the Virginia Lake Management Staff. She holds an Associates Degree in Computer Science from Tidewater Community College and possesses much related work experience and a never-ending desire to learn. These qualities, in addition to her organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong work ethic make her a perfect fit for our growing company. Trina is a native to South Hampton Roads. She and her husband make their home in Virginia Beach with their two dogs. When she’s not crunching numbers, she enjoys Jazzercise, scuba diving, and just hanging out with family and friends.
Ethan Chappell
Aquatic Specialist
Ethan Chappell is an Aquatic Specialist with Virginia Lake Management. Prior to joining the Virginia Lake Management staff, Ethan’s career in environmental management began at the Aquarena Center, Texas State University - San Marcos. Within 6 months of employment, Ethan was SCUBA certified and working as an underwater gardener. Because of his natural ability in the water and strong work ethic, Ethan was quickly promoted to Aquatic Maintenance Worker and Dive Supervisor. Ethan led over 3,000 volunteer divers in a campaign to manually remove hydrilla from the San Marcos Springs, home to 8 federally listed threatened and endangered species. After three years, the total vegetative mass of hydrilla was reduced from 85% to less than 7%. Ethan managed other invasive aquatic species while at Spring Lake including water hyacinth, water lettuce, milfoil, parrot feather, and hygrophila.
Additional responsibilities with Aquarena Center included minimizing algae growth at spring openings to enhance visibility from the glass bottom boats, providing interpretive tours on the unique natural and historical San Marcos Springs, operating and maintaining a fleet of boats including a mechanical aquatic harvester, and supporting research activities in the headwaters ecosystem among other tasks. These experiences yielded a strong foundation in aquatic plant identification and in the development of innovative techniques to restore native aquascapes. Ethan also learned to develop relationships with federal, state, and local officials for the integrated management of lake environments.
Ethan grew up in the central Texas hill country where he developed his love for the outdoors. He enjoys camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting along countless miles of Texas waterways, clear springs, and limestone ledges. After moving to Maryland, Ethan looks forward to exploring the natural beauty of the region.
Adam Harrow
Environmental Scientist
Adam Harrow is an Environmental Scientist with Virginia Lake Management. Early in life, Adam gained an appreciation for the natural world while camping and enjoying outdoor activities as a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Participating in several backpacking and adventure trips throughout Northwestern America, Adam quickly decided to focus his studies on the environment. He earned his degree in Environmental Science from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and immediately showed a real passion for fresh water management, participating in several aquatic studies including riparian repair, water quality testing, pollution levels in stormwater runoff and the use of plants for water filtration. Following college, Adam interned with Great Rivers Greenway District out of St. Louis, Missouri where he participated in the establishment of greenways and multi-use paved pathways throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Adam focused much of his attention on the use of green technologies for city improvements; permeable paved surfaces, solar street lighting, composting, and soil and plant filtration of storm water alongside paved surfaces.
Adam’s future plans include furthering techniques to better manage sources of fresh water, and improving upon the use of nature’s water filtering ability. As a member of Virginia Lake Management, Adam brings his passion for all things aquatic and his strong work ethic to proudly serve customers in all facets of lake management. During his “downtime” you will find Adam camping, hiking, or enjoying just about any outdoor activity.
